Job summary

Leidos is seeking a Veterinary Technician I to support NAMRU-SA in San Antonio, TX. This role involves daily handling and restraint of animals, assistance with surgical procedures, and health surveillance in a DoD laboratory setting.

Required qualifications include a High School Diploma/GED with 2 years related experience or an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology with 6 months related experience, and a commitment to ALAT certification. US citizenship and SECRET clearance are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED plus 2 years of related experience.
• Willingness to work towards obtaining ALAT certification.
• Laboratory animal science experience preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted).
• Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance.
• Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.
• The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level.

Responsibilities

• Daily handling and restraint of various small and large animal species.
• Conduct and support surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, and specific pathogen-free techniques.
• Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, and quality assurance procedures.
• Conduct daily and weekly inspections to ensure compliance with standards.
• Assist in preparation of purchase requests to include animal procurement and coordination of shipping procedures.
• Assist with maintenance of inventory supplies.
• Supports coordination of animal research work activities between contractors, scientists, animal care staff and research laboratory technicians.
