Here is a testimonial from a recent student extern:
“The externship at North Country Veterinary Services was exceptional, and I learned a lot as a 4th-year veterinary student during the 8 weeks I was there. The externship provided opportunities to learn new skills, with each veterinarian teaching skills I now use in my rotations. The environment is welcoming and encourages dialogue, which is essential for learning and communication. I was allowed to follow different veterinarians daily and act independently, such as conducting physical exams, making diagnoses (under supervision), monitoring anesthesia during surgeries, and participating as the primary surgeon in spay and neuter surgeries. I also gained insight into veterinary hospital management, finances, and the role of a veterinary manager.
The experience was especially valuable given my limited private practice experience. I received excellent mentorship from all veterinarians.
In Small Animal services, I managed clinical cases, participated in anesthesia and surgery, completed medical records, and collaborated on diagnosis and treatment plans.
In Large Animal services, I learned about rural practice, client communication, and participated in dairy herd checks, lameness treatment, IM injections, blood collection from horses, and equine physical exams.
Overall, my time at North Country Veterinary Services was exceptional. The mentorship boosted my confidence and expanded my veterinary knowledge.”
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on the stipend program can be found HERE. The stipend for North Country Veterinary Services - Pulaski is $1,000.
