National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers a unique externship for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Students work closely with veterinarians on various tasks, including patient care and treatment planning. The externship ranges from two to eight weeks, enhancing both clinical skills and professional growth.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its own characteristics, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here for stipend program details. The stipend amount at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital is $500.
