National Veterinary Associates offers a hands-on externship for DVM students at their hospitals, providing a unique opportunity to experience the daily operations of veterinary medicine. Students will work with DVMs, gaining clinical experience and enhancing essential skills over a period ranging from two to eight weeks, with potential travel/living stipends available.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising DVMs to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Externs will also have the opportunity to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All DVM students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
DVM students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
