An externship at Midwest Animal Hospital provides veterinary students with a unique opportunity to gain clinical experience and understand daily operations. Candidates will work closely with veterinarians, perform medical tasks, and enhance their communication skills while being part of a supportive environment focused on exceptional animal care.
An externship experience at Midwest Animal Hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externships at Midwest Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
