National Veterinary Associates offers an externship for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience at their hospitals. Participants will collaborate closely with veterinarians, aiding in patient care, performing exams, and developing essential skills. The externship duration varies, and a stipend may be available for eligible students.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its own characteristics, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship durations at Midwest Bird & Exotic Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
