Job summary

A veterinary practice in western Massachusetts is seeking Veterinary Externs for hands-on training opportunities. Join a collaborative team where you will gain experience in patient care, diagnostics, and surgical assistance while enhancing your professional communication skills. This externship is open to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students and includes a travel and living expense stipend.

Qualifications

• 3rd or 4th year veterinary student in the clinical portion of their education.
• Ability to gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Skills in communication with medical teams and clients.
• Externship supports hands-on learning under supervising DVMs.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with supervising DVMs to gain practical experience.
• Assist in creating treatment plans and performing diagnostics.
• Observe and assist in surgical procedures.
• Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures under supervision.
• Develop medical management plans and communicate with the medical team and clients.

Northampton Veterinary Clinic is an award-winning, 7-doctor practice in the heart of western Massachusetts. We serve a dedicated client base that cares for their pets like children. We have a collaborative doctor team that is invaluable to the constant learning and adaptation that is fundamental to practicing excellence in veterinary medicine.

Students will work closely with the supervising DVMs to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. We offer externships to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

DVM students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. See stipend amounts for details.
