An externship at National Veterinary Associates allows veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience, engaging in patient care and treatment alongside experienced veterinarians. This unique opportunity fosters professional growth and enhances essential skills within a supportive environment dedicated to animal care.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Third and fourth-year veterinary students are encouraged to apply.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
