National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship for veterinary students at its Gresham, Oregon location. Participants will gain hands-on clinical experience, collaborate with seasoned veterinarians, and improve essential skills in patient care and surgical assistance during a structured internship lasting from two to eight weeks. This role emphasizes learning and professional development in the veterinary field.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
We are the largest small animal practice in Gresham, Oregon, located just outside Portland with easy access to Mt. Hood and outdoor activities. Our team includes 8 experienced collaborative doctors and a strong support staff, all dedicated to providing the best care and a comprehensive experience for our clients. With recent growth, we emphasize community culture through regular doctor rounds and team meetings to promote continual learning.
At Mt. Hood Pet Medical, externs work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, assisting or performing surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Externs also have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may qualify for a travel/living expense stipend. View stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
