Laurelwood Animal Hospital offers a veterinary externship for 3rd and 4th-year students to gain practical experience in a supportive environment. Externs will work alongside experienced veterinarians, participate actively in patient care, and potentially receive a stipend to cover travel and living expenses.
Laurelwood Animal Hospital is a 5 ½ doctor practice offering GP services, some specialty procedures (including an Internist on staff), and I-131 treatment for cats. An externship at our hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand daily operations and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.
Externs will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. These externships are offered to 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and for more details on the stipend program.
