National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience. Participants work alongside skilled veterinarians to learn vital skills including patient assessments and treatment planning while developing their professional communication abilities. This opportunity promotes personal and professional growth within a supportive environment dedicated to animal care.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
