National Veterinary Associates offers DVM students an externship to gain hands-on clinical experience while working closely with supervising veterinarians. This opportunity enhances skills in patient care, diagnostics, and dentistry in a supportive environment dedicated to animal care. Externship lengths vary and may include a stipend for travel and living expenses.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising DVMs to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. These externships are designed for clinical year students only.
DVM students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and here for detailed information on the stipend program.
