This part-time hourly position begins no later than August 2, 2026.Position could begin sooner depending on the availability oftheselected candidate.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Director of the VCUarts Performing ArtsGroup, the Box Office Manager is responsible for overall box officemanagement including the effective delivery of daily ticketingoperations, patron database and records management, online sales,customer service, and supervision of other part-time positions. TheBox Office Manager partners with Chairs, faculty, and staff in thedepartments of VCUarts Theater, Music, and Dance and Choreographyto coordinate the front-line role of the box office in facilitatingapproximately 70 performances and special events per year. Eventscould include the use of VCUarts performing arts spaces by otheruniversity programs or school offices. VCUarts performance venuesinclude the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, GraceStreet Theater, W. Black Music Center, Shafer Street Playhouse, aswell as other locations on- and off-campus.

Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service skills and respondpromptly to patron inquiries and requests from performing artsdepartments
  • Ensure the timely and accurate processing of ticketingtransactions in Etix software
  • Oversee data management in the Etix system, including accurateposting and maintenance of scheduled events
  • Collaborate with departments to plan and implement strategiesto bolster sales, enhance service, and promote VCUartsperformances
  • Maintain and monitor box office website to ensure content iscurrent and up-to-date
  • Manage front of house, maintain box office schedule, and openthe box office on day of performance
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training, scheduling, andtimekeeping of ushers, box office associates, and work studystudents to cover events across multiple venues
  • Create and maintain employee training documentation forticketing transactions and customer service
  • Foster and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, safe, andaccessible environment for patrons and box office employees
  • Keep accurate patron records as well as records of daily/weeklysales including a summary of performance totals and number ofpatrons who attended the shows
  • Produce regular reports that inform departmental leadership ofweekly sales (each Monday); performance sales (after eachperformance closes); show sales (after all performances of theproduction close); and annual sales (once at the end of theseason)
  • Provide department leadership with an assessment of trends,customer information and feedback, and suggestions on how to improve performance facilitation through bi-monthly meetings
  • Coordinate scheduling of VCUarts facilities as needed
Additional information about VCUarts performancevenues:
  • The W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, contains a500-seat concert hall, as well as a 257-seat theater and showcasesmusic performances and theater productions throughout the year
  • The Grace Street Theater is a 225-seat theater and is theprimary performing venue for the Department of Dance andChoreography, but also frequently shows films
  • The James W. Black Music Center hosts many student recitals andensemble performances in its 330-seat recital hall, which is arenovated former church
  • The Shafer Street Playhouse is home to the student-run ShaferAlliance Laboratory Theatre. This building contains rehearsal spaceand a 150-seat theater.
Work Expectations:
  • This is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt position. Healthcare, life insurance, retirement, and/or leave benefits are notprovided with this position
  • The Box Office Manager will work on average 29 hours per week.In order to comply with applicable federal and state laws andpolicies, part-time, non-benefited employees are not permitted towork more than twenty-nine (29) hours per week on average
  • The Box Office Manager must be flexible to meet the needs ofperformance schedules, working a flexible schedule that includesdays, nights, and weekend hours.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience andtraining.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and appropriate experiencein a customer service forward field is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze data andcommunicate trends
  • Drive to take initiative, be proactive, and makerecommendations for process improvement
  • Experience with Etix or another ticketing software ispreferred
  • Knowledge of credit card security, cash handling procedures,and general transactional compliance
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various background checks andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member atVCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in the arts or an arts related field ispreferred
  • Two or more years of experience in a box office setting and/orin an arts organization is preferred
  • Familiarity with VCUarts and its performance programming ispreferred
