Job summary

County of Kauaʻi is seeking a substitute/on-call Van Driver to operate and maintain a passenger van on designated routes and schedules.

This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, at least 1 year of general work experience, a valid Hawaii Type 3 driver’s license, and a Department of Transportation Medical Examiner Certificate. On-call shifts and non civil service status apply.

Job Summary:

As a substitute/on-call, operates and maintains a passenger van in transporting passengers along designated destinations according to assigned schedules; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

(The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position).

  • Transports passengers over specified routes;
  • May assist disabled passengers into and out of vehicle;
  • May secure passenger’s wheelchair to restraining devices to stabilize wheelchair during trip;
  • May operate radio or similar devices to communicate with base station or other vehicles;
  • Conducts daily inspection of vehicle;
  • Services vehicle;
  • Maintains service and passenger trip records;
  • Reports defects of vehicle for appropriate attention and repair;
  • Maintains vehicle in clean and sanitary condition;
  • May make minor and emergency repairs to van as required; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience Preferred:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and

  • one (1) year general work experience.

Qualifying General Work Experience:

Any work experience which may involve the basic skills: reading, writing, computation and communication.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (Hawai‘i Type 3 or equivalent) and a valid State of Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Medical Examiner Certificate.
