Job summary

The University of Utah is seeking Tutors for Utah Reads to help elementary school students struggling with reading. Tutors will work with students individually or in small groups and may assist in after-school programs.

Must be a current student in good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA and have a Federal Work‑Study Award. Flexible scheduling is available, but a commitment for at least one school year is expected.

Pay & Hours

Pay Rate: $16.50 per hour. Tutors set their own weekly schedules within the available tutoring hours of the assigned site. Tutors must commit to at least 4 hours per week on at least 2 days of the week and cannot exceed 19 hours per week.

Job Summary

Utah Reads employees tutor elementary school students who are reading below grade‑level, working with children individually or in small groups. Tutors may also provide classroom help or assistance in after‑school programs. Tutors are assigned to a specific site and work off‑campus. We partner with six sites in the Salt Lake City School District, including:

• Edison Elementary
• Liberty Elementary
• Glendale‑Mountain View Community Learning Center

Responsibilities

• Training and Orientation: New tutors complete orientation and trainings before beginning work and attend any meetings held at their site.
• Transportation: Tutors provide their own transportation to and from the assigned school site.
• Scheduling: Tutors set their own regular weekly schedules within the available tutoring hours of the partnering site.
• Consistency: Tutors are asked to commit to working with Utah Reads for at least one school year, unless they are graduating mid‑year.
• Community Partnership: Tutors comply with all rules of their assigned school site, including dress code, safety procedures, and other site guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be in good standing with the University of Utah, academically and in conduct.
• Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
• Shows commitment to campus and community through involvement.
• Has current Federal Work‑Study Award for the current school year.

Other Requirements

This position may require successful completion of a criminal background check and/or drug screen.
