Summary of Duties
The position is an entry-level role within the Water Distribution/Water Pollution Control department of Public Works. It involves performing basic inspection, repair, installation, and maintenance work to support a municipal water distribution and wastewater collection system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, repair, and maintain lift and pump stations, including water, storm, and sewer water collection systems.
- Perform field work on water, storm, sewer lines, and fire hydrants.
- Conduct daily maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers using specialized equipment (sewer combo truck).
- Respond to customer calls regarding sewer backups and problems, and unclog backed-up city mains.
- Perform utility locates for water, storm, sewer lines, fiber optics, and fire hydrants for city and contractor projects.
- Provide backup and assistance to the Meter Technician as needed.
- Operate and maintain city vehicles, hand tools, power saws, small engines, and lawn equipment.
- Operate sewer combo truck, dump truck, backhoe, and excavator for system repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain a safe work environment through general cleaning and upkeep activities.
- Transport tools and supplies using city vehicles.
- Perform hydrant flow tests.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain and maintain Class II Distribution license within three years.
- Obtain and maintain a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
- During the probation period, pass the written exam within 90 days and obtain CDL with air endorsement within six months; city pays for CDL costs.
- Obtain certification as a Registered Flagger from the American Traffic Safety Services Association within three years.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
- Knowledge of safety practices related to confined spaces, high voltage, and hazardous environments; ability to learn first aid.
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance practices for sewer and water systems; ability to learn procedures.
- Effective interpersonal skills for working with diverse individuals and agencies.
- Ability to remain calm under stress and interact effectively with upset or confused individuals.
- Ability to work in adverse conditions, including confined spaces, high places, and in sewage.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, and schematics.
- Ability to work independently, analyze situations, and make sound judgments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional ethics.
- Efficient use of city resources.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Other Requirements
- Physical ability to climb, reach, sit, stand, kneel, and handle tools.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions and on roadways.
- Exposure to mechanical, traffic, and environmental hazards, including sewage and infectious diseases.
- Occasional heavy lifting (up to 200 pounds).
- On-call availability for emergencies and high-priority situations.
