Job summary

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United States seeks an Area Publishing & Communications Director to lead a team of managers and staff in delivering clear, single-voice communications for priority audiences. You will oversee publishing products, campaigns, and relationships with government, interfaith, and community leaders to advance the Church’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent post-secondary education/certificate in business, public relations, or a communication-related field.
  • 7 years of professional-level experience.
  • A combination of education and experience for a total of 11 years may be considered.
  • Proven track record of effective people management with at least three years of people-management experience.
  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and organizational development skills.
  • Experience in developing, designing, and executing strategic communication plans.
  • Active listener and learner with ability to understand the needs of a wide variety of audiences to communicate effectively.
  • Experience managing organizational brand, reputation, internal communication, and/or external media relations.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas and processes in a straightforward way to leadership and communication teams at all levels.
  • Extensive experience with a wide variety of communication channels.
  • Solid understanding of public relations and relationship building.
  • Skilled at utilizing research methods and strategies to address practical problems.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems.
  • Experience in crisis management.
  • Leadership and management experience with strong people skills.
  • Competency in the use of technology, including the Microsoft Office product suite.

Responsibilities

  • Increase understanding of the Church among audiences through unified communication efforts across the area.
  • Manage the Church’s organizational identity and reputation within the area.
  • Develop internal and external campaigns.
  • Build and lead strategic relationships with key opinion leaders across the area including government, interfaith, and community leaders.
  • Extend the reach of Church communication through identity, messaging, and channels.
  • Ensure research supports local product/content development and that materials pass doctrinal, IP, privacy, and Visual Identity Office review.
  • Unify church communication and publishing at the area level through integrated planning and alignment with the area plan.
  • Oversee area publishing products including budget forecasting, resource planning, and timelines.
  • Develop a team that understands audience needs, values, and experiences.
  • Oversee product management to support area products and global initiatives.
  • Preserve doctrinal accuracy, data privacy, and product plan alignment for all deliverables.
  • Establish relationships with leaders, organizations, and influencers.
  • Coordinate and assure effective use of Church channels at the area level to extend the gospel.
  • Oversee a unified production operation across print, video, animation, broadcasting, photography, social media, and web publishing.
  • Oversee contractors and vendors, including measurement of work quality, sourcing, and contract termination.
  • Manage HR processes with hiring, promotions, and performance management.
