Job summary

Lake Superior State University seeks a Director of Human Resources to lead the university’s HR and payroll functions on site in Sault Sainte Marie, MI. Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Operations, this role drives regulatory compliance, supports Title IX efforts, and oversees campus safety in partnership with internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, management, leadership, business, or a related field.
• Five years of progressive leadership responsibility in human resources.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive topics with employees.
• Demonstrated written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work with HR systems, data, and reporting.
• Working knowledge and experience with HR laws and regulations.
• Ability to lead, supervise, and develop team members.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement all human resources management functions.
• Partner with University leadership to support institutional mission and goals.
• Review HR tools, approval workflows, and job functions, making changes to improve unit effectiveness.
• Build an internal culture that supports teamwork, pride in employee roles, and professional growth and development.
• Ensure excellent customer service across internal and external relationships with the HR office.
• Manage employment status change related activities.
• Administer LSSU’s benefits program.
• Maintain and update HR systems, software, and data, including Banner.
• Oversee accuracy of employee position data, contracts, leave information, and benefits.
• Identify succession planning strategies for the University.
• Provide ongoing communication to employees about benefits associated with University employment, including retirement, tuition benefits, wellness and recreation opportunities, and training and development opportunities.
• Ensure HR policies and procedures are current and accessible to the university community.
• Advise employees and supervisors on performance and disciplinary guidelines, conduct investigations as needed, and recommend action plans.
• In partnership with the University’s Title IX Coordinator, support compliance with Title IX harassment and discrimination prevention.
• Maintain the university organizational chart.
• Oversee campus safety including risk management and parking enforcement.
• Supervise four full-time employees, including two HR generalists, the Risk & Title IX Coordinator, and the Payroll Coordinator.
