Job summary

University Hospitals Avon Rehabilitation Hospital is seeking a dedicated Unit Secretary. You will support patient flow, maintain electronic medical records from admission to discharge, and coordinate with clinicians to ensure timely orders and accurate charting.

The role requires strong communication, medical terminology knowledge, and the ability to multi-task in a busy inpatient environment. Schedule is full-time, 3:00 PM–11:30 PM, with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; two years of college level education preferred.
• Computer experience required.
• Prior hospital experience preferred.
• Ability to work with all levels of medical personnel, patients and families.
• Ability to speak and write concisely with knowledge of medical terminology desirable.

Responsibilities

• Greet visitors, direct them and answer questions.
• Initiate medical records on admission and maintain throughout stay; close at discharge.
• Initiate follow-up regarding doctors’ orders.
• Process patient and special charges.
• Serve as unit receptionist for calls and visitor information.
• Interact with unit personnel, physicians, visitors and families to exchange information.
• Assist patients with requests and attend appointments as needed.
• Exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution.
• Ensure patient and unit equipment, supplies and procedures are ordered and received.

University Hospitals Avon Rehabilitation Hospital is a state-of-the-art, inpatient acute rehabilitation hospital dedicated to the treatment and recovery of individuals who have experienced the debilitating effects of a severe injury or illness.

Our rehabilitation programs provide ongoing care and specialized treatment to patients throughout their recovery journey. We offer customized, individualized rehabilitation tailored to the specific needs of those recovering from a stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation, and orthopedic injury.

How you'll contribute

A Unit Secretary who excels in this role:

• Ensures visitors areacknowledgedquickly and helps direct them and answer any questions.
• Initiates medical record upon admission. Maintains said record during patientstay andcloses the record upon patient discharge within the electronic medical record.
• Initiates follow-up regardingdoctors’orders.
• Ensure that allpatientsand special charges are processed.
• Serveas unit receptionist for incoming and outgoing calls and visitor information.
• Interactfrequently with unit personnel, physicians, visitors, patients’ families and other ancillary hospital personnel for the purpose of giving and receiving information.
• Hascontact with patients. Duties may include answering patient lights, and fulfilling patientrequestsfor non-care items,attendingappointments with patients, and workingin the café.
• Requires professional, courteous, and helpfulmannersin all contacts with customers.
• Position involves multi-tasking in a high stress environment. Requires constant mental alertness and the ability to calmly and accurately perform duties when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions.
• Must have the ability to exercise judgment and initiative in the resolution of problems encountered.
• Ensurethat all patient and unit equipment, supplies and procedures are ordered and received

What we're looking for

Applicants should possess the following qualifications and skills:

• High school diploma required, with two years of college level education preferred.
• Computer experience required
• Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
• Must have the ability to work with all levels of medical personnel, patients and families
• Ability to speak and write concisely with knowledge of medical terminologyis desirable.
