Job summary

Broadlawns Medical Center seeks a Unit Clerk to support our nursing units by performing clerical and receptionist duties, coordinating patient activities, and maintaining a professional environment across multiple clinics in the Des Moines area.

Under supervision, you will input orders, schedule tests, obtain prior authorizations, and assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges. Strong communication and computer skills are required.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or GED required.
• Proficiency with office equipment (telephone, fax, copier, computer, printer).
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities are essential.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating nursing unit activities.
• Perform clerical and receptionist duties and maintain unit environment.
• Schedule patient activities and tests, and arrange prior authorizations as needed.
• Input data into computer systems and coordinate with ancillary services (Dietary, Radiology, Lab, Social Services).
• Serve as unit receptionist and handle calls with service excellence.
• Support orientation for new clerical staff and provide basic computer system training.

PRN hours can be 0-40 hours per week.CHARACTERISTIC DUTIESAdheres to the philosophy and objectives, and policies and procedures of the Medical Center, including safety rules and regulations. Follows the BMC Code of Conduct.Communicates clearly, concisely, and accurately to all team members.Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, Providers or designee performs documentation, communication, and scheduling of patients’ activities and tests.Processes orders in the computer system to the appropriate ancillary services (i.e. Dietary, Respiratory Care, Radiology, Laboratory, and Social Services)Performs clerical duties in a timely manner related to the admissions, transfers, and discharges of all patients of all ages and inputs into the computer system with pertinent information regarding patients.Serves as a receptionist for the unit.Answers the telephone and intercom systems with appropriate service excellence skills.Interacts with patients and families of all ages in a courteous manner.Maintains work area in a neat and orderly fashion.Orders supplies and equipment.Receives and places items in their proper storage areas on an ongoing basis. Inputs data into the ordering system.Performs messenger duties as needed.Participates in continuous performance improvement activities as assigned.Assists in orientation of new staff to clerical duties of the unit.Assists with computer system training for all new staff.Schedules appointments for follow-up visits, tests at other facilities, diagnostic tests and obtains prior authorization.Performs other duties within the unit coordinator’s responsibility as requested/assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSUses office equipment efficiently (i.e. telephone, fax, copy machine, computer, printer).Works consistently as a team member.Demonstrates effective communication strategies in dealing with patients and hospital personnel.
