Job summary

Long Island University is looking for CLAS tutors to provide individual and small-group tutoring to improve academic achievement. Tutors will meet with students regularly to clarify learning issues and enhance study skills. The role requires strong communication skills, a minimum grade of B in the subject tutored, and a commitment to supporting students' learning. Priority is given to LIU Brooklyn students, and previous tutoring experience is preferred but not required. Regular training sessions are mandatory.

Job Description

CLAS tutors provide individual and/or small‑group tutoring to students in the Center for Learning and Academic Success. They assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify learning issues, work on study skills and review content. Tutoring sessions are designed to supplement in‑class work and focus on providing opportunities for active learning, self‑reflection, and collaborative study. Tutors, acting as educational mentors rather than instructors, focus not on teaching content and completing homework assignments, but on posing problems and putting course subjects into practice through critical thinking and re‑examination. Subject Specialists focus on advanced level courses, and act as mentors for other tutoring staff.

Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing the text, helping students to predict test questions, helping students formulate ideas for research, working on solutions to problems, and/or assigning practice exercises. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they tutor, and they are expected to continue developing their tutoring skills.

Principle Responsibilities

• Tutor students individually or in small groups, focusing on developing better learners.
• Uphold LIU Brooklyn’s policies of academic integrity.
• Serve as a positive role model for students and other tutors.
• Support the teaching methods and practices of tutoring—guiding, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback.
• Uphold the National Tutoring Association’s Code of Ethics.

Education Requirements

• Passed content course with a grade of B or better in the subject area which the candidate desires to tutor.
• Be recommended by at least one faculty member or academic dean in the content area.
• Possess good oral communication skills (demonstrated in the interview) and ability to explain concepts well.
• Availability to work at least 4 hours per week during CLAS’s regular hours.
• Demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring.
• Be available for weekly tutor training in the form of Mentor Groups and Tutor Development meetings and workshops.

Additional Requirements

• Maintain accurate records and return them to the supervisor in a timely fashion.
• Strict adherence to the policies and procedures outlined in the CLAS Handbook.
• Possess the utmost respect for the confidentiality of the tutor/student relationship.
• Report concerns about students to the Director. Areas of concern to report are absenteeism, lack of class/tutor session preparation, emotional stress, questions pertaining to academic integrity, or any other indications of obstacles to academic success.
• Complete and turn in periodic evaluations of tutoring sessions as requested.

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience

• Attendance at ongoing Tutor Development Meetings and/or Mentor Groups is mandatory.
• Priority is given to LIU Brooklyn student applicants.
• Previous tutoring and/or teaching experience is preferred, but not required.
