Job summary

LIU Brooklyn's Center for Learning and Academic Success (CLAS) seeks tutors to provide individual or small-group support, helping students develop study skills, clarify learning issues, and practice critical thinking. Tutors act as mentors, supplementing in-class work and guiding active learning.

Responsibilities include tutoring sessions, maintaining records, upholding academic integrity, and participating in Mentor Groups; prior tutoring or teaching is preferred but not required, with LIU

Qualifications

• Passed content course with a grade of B or better in the subject area.
• Be recommended by at least one faculty member or academic dean in the content area.
• Possess good oral communication skills (demonstrated in the interview) and ability to explain concepts well.
• Availability to work at least 4 hours per week during CLAS’s regular hours.
• Demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring.
• Be available for weekly tutor training in Mentor Groups and Tutor Development meetings/workshops.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students individually or in small groups, focusing on developing better learners.
• Uphold LIU-Brooklyn’s policies of academic integrity.
• Serve as positive role model for student tutees and other tutors.
• Support the pedagogies and practices advocated by tutoring—guiding, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback.
• Uphold the National Tutoring Association’s Code of Ethics.
