Job summary

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York invites applications for part-time Math Tutor positions within the Learning Center. Tutors will assist students in MAT 1190, 1272, 1275, 1375, 1475, and 1575, in one-on-one or small groups, and document attendance daily.

Reporting to the Director or Assistant Director, tutors coordinate monthly meetings, provide verification slips, and may perform related duties.

Qualifications

  • Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.
  • Bachelor's degree or above preferred.
  • 3.3 GPA or higher in college mathematics courses.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule of a minimum of 5 hours for the entire semester.
  • Enjoy working with people and have considerable patience when dealing with others.
  • Ability to communicate adequately within the academic discipline.
  • Tutoring experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in select math courses (e.g., MAT 1190, MAT 1272, MAT 1275, MAT 1375, MAT 1475, MAT 1575).
  • Tutor students one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Attend monthly tutor coordination meetings and trainings.
  • Document student attendance daily on a tutor log sheet.
  • Provide verification slips as requested.
  • Confer with directors on student progress and challenges.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the director/assistant director.

GENERAL DUTIES
  • Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.
  • There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.
  • Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records, operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards, act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.
  • Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.
  • Acts as cashier.
  • Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.
  • Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.
  • Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.
  • Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.
  • May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering 58 associate and bachelor’s degree programs. The Learning Center at City Tech invites applications for part‑time positions of Math Tutor (College Assistant.)

Reporting to the Director and/or Assistant Director of the Learning Center, the Math Tutors will:

  • Tutor students in select math courses: MAT 1190 (quantitative reasoning), MAT 1190co, MAT 1272 statistics, MAT 1275 (college algebra and trigonometry), MAT 1275co, MAT 1375 (precalculus), MAT 1475 (calculus 1), and MAT 1575 (calculus 2)
  • Tutor students one‑on‑one or in small groups and be attentive to all students who require assistance.
  • Attend monthly tutor coordination meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Document student attendance daily on a tutor log sheet.
  • Provide students with verification slips as requested.
  • Confer with director and assistant director as to students' progress and challenges.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director and/or assistant director.
  • All positions are subject to budget availability.

Compensation

$19.12 per hour
