Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation seeks a Tunnel Maintainer to perform hands-on maintenance and monitoring to keep tunnel systems safe and functioning.

This full-time role requires two years of roadway maintenance experience, a valid Pennsylvania CDL with Air Brake restriction removed, and the ability to obtain additional DOT certifications during probation. Shifts include nights and rotations in a 24/7 environment; telework is not available.

Qualifications

• Two years of roadway maintenance and repair experience or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate required.
• Pennsylvania Class A CDL with Air Brake restriction removed required on day one.
• Probationary period: obtain DOT certifications for heavy trucks and loaders.

Responsibilities

• Tunnel maintenance: clean drainage, mow grounds, remove debris, and maintain tunnel structures and facilities.
• Incident response: assist motorists, remove hazards, tow vehicles, and restore traffic flow during emergencies.
• Condition monitoring: observe tunnels for traffic issues, CO levels, fires, and over-height vehicles.
• Equipment operation: use towing devices, wash trucks, pressure washers, and related equipment.
• Work zone setup: deploy cones, signs, and crash trucks to safely close lanes during maintenance.
• Safety compliance: follow procedures, complete inspections, and report unsafe conditions.
