Job summary

Pueblo of Pojoaque is seeking a General Ledger (GL) Accountant to maintain accurate financial records for governmental and enterprise operations. You will perform GL accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting support, while serving as a backup to Accounts Payable for continuity of payments.

Under the direction of the Finance Director, you will help prepare monthly reports, year-end schedules, and audit support, ensuring compliance with Tribal policies and GASB

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including general ledger, governmental, or fund accounting.
  • Experience with Tribal governments, municipalities, or public-sector entities preferred.
  • 2+ years with MIP Fund Accounting (Abila MIP) preferred.
  • Experience with Accounts Payable systems and processes; Microix experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities for Tribal governmental and enterprise funds.
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations with supporting docs.
  • Reconcile general ledger, bank, balance sheet, and interfund accounts; resolve discrepancies.
  • Support monthly financial reports, year-end schedules, and government-wide statements.
  • Assist with external audits, single audits, and grant accounting reporting.

Position Title: General Ledger (GL) Accountant
Organization: Pueblo of Pojoaque
Department: Finance
Reports To: Lead General Ledger (GL) Accountant
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The General Ledger (GL) Accountant works under the direction of the Finance Director and the Lead General Ledger Accountant to maintain accurate and timely financial records for the Pueblo's governmental and enterprise operations. The position performs general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting support in accordance with applicable accounting standards and Tribal policies. The GL Accountant also serves as a backup to Accounts Payable to help ensure continuity of payment processing and related functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities for Tribal governmental and enterprise funds
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, corrections, and supporting documentation for review and approval
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger, bank, balance sheet, revenue, expenditure, and interfund accounts; research and resolve discrepancies timely
  • Maintain accurate fund accounting classifications for revenues, expenditures, assets, liabilities, and interfund activity
  • Review accounting transactions and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Tribal policies and applicable accounting standards
  • Assist the Lead GL Accountant with preparation of monthly financial reports, year-end schedules, and government-wide and fund financial statements
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for external audits and single audits, and respond to assigned auditor requests
  • Support grant accounting and reporting, including review of account activity for compliance with award requirements and Uniform Guidance
  • Work with program managers and Tribal departments to research account questions, correct coding, and support budget-to-actual reporting
  • Maintain organized accounting records and documentation in accordance with record-retention requirements
  • Identify reconciliation issues, control weaknesses, or unusual transactions and promptly elevate them to the Lead GL Accountant
  • Assist with implementation of accounting procedures, internal controls, system improvements, and process efficiencies
  • Serve as backup for Accounts Payable, including invoice entry, coding and documentation review, payment processing, vendor record maintenance, and other A/P duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate's in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
Experience:
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including general ledger, governmental, or fund accounting
  • Experience working with Tribal governments, municipalities, or other public-sector entities preferred
  • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with MIP Fund Accounting (Abila MIP or a similar fund accounting system) preferred
  • Experience with Accounts Payable systems and processes required; Microix experience preferred
Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of GASB standards and fund accounting principles
  • Familiarity with federal grant compliance and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200)
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., MIP Fund Accounting, Oracle, or similar)
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong financial reporting and reconciliation skills
