Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Inc. is seeking an accounting leader to establish and oversee the department’s policies, controls, and reporting systems in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.

You will ensure legal and regulatory compliance, manage budgeting, grants, and audits, and supervise the accounting staff to support tribal programs and operations. The role emphasizes nonprofit expertise, bondability, and collaboration with executive leadership to maintain financial integrity and regulatory

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business and 2–5 years of experience in a computerized accounting office.
  • CPA certification is desirable.
  • Prior experience with nonprofit or tribal organizations preferred.
  • Must be bondable and able to work with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting department operations, internal controls, and financial reporting systems.

Position Summary

Establishes and maintains the accounting department's policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems. Ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. Oversees cost and general accounting, accounts receivable/payable, payroll and risk management. Responsibilities include the overall management and supervision of the accounting department.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain the systems and integrity of accounting, financial reporting, and internal control systems.
  • Oversees budget ensuring expenses are within the budget limitations and allocated to proper programs, according to the relevant federal and state laws and policies of the board.
  • Ensures all grant conditions are complied with and that the entire financial operation complies with grantee policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintains and updates, annually, financial manual and accounting procedures.
  • Prepares and issues financial reports to the Board of Directors reflecting cash status, cash transactions, functional expenses, and performance in accordance with the approved budget.
  • Ensures that a comprehensive audit of the organization's accounting is conducted annually with an audit report issued to the Board of Directors and funding agencies.
  • Prepare budgets, budget estimates, and financial reports· at the request of the CEO and/or the Board of Directors.
  • Assists program staff with budget revisions and new grant proposals.
  • Ensure proper tax filings.
  • Develops the Indirect Cost Proposal, annually, to submit to the cognizant agency.
  • Retains hiring and termination authority for the accounting department. Train, counsel, review, coach and manage the staff in the accounting department.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains space cost allocations for central service billings.
  • Oversee insurance policies - property, general, cyber, crime, and workers compensation.
  • Backup for accounting staff as needed.
  • Engages in networking activities to ensure awareness of services available.
  • Attend all trainings and meetings as scheduled.
  • Seeks and attends additional training, conferences, or seminars as need to stay current on job related subject matters.
Working Relationships and Scope

Reports directly to the CEO. Supervises assigned positions. Daily contact with the employees in the same department to manage the overall day-to-day operations. Frequent contact with the CEO, Human Resources Director, Supervisors, and other members of management to gather and provide information. Frequent contact with all GLITC employees. Ongoing contact with federal and state agencies for purposes of remaining current on various issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

An equivalent combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered. Bachelor's degree in accounting or business and two - five years of experience working in a computerized accounting office. CPA certification is desired. Prior experience within mid-to-large organization and/or non-profit agencies. Must be bondable. Experience with a Native American Tribal organization. Individuals must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people. Individuals must be able to follow routine instructions and apply logic in the solving of various computer related issues. Must be able to perform basic, intermediate, and advanced math functions. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be an effective and cooperative team player.

This is a full-time exempt position based on skills and experience, with a pay range of $75,000 - $86,000 annually, depending on years of experience, relevant experience and education.

This position is located in our Headquarters office, Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.

This is not a remote position.
