Independence Excavating, Inc. is seeking a Traveling Land Surveyor to prepare and review data for field crews and approve cut sheets and as-builts on construction projects.

This full-time role requires both field and office work, with local travel to job sites in Roanoke, VA and surrounding areas. The position emphasizes accuracy, equipment proficiency with Trimble systems, and collaboration with project teams to deliver precise surveying results.

Qualifications

• Minimum HS Diploma; additional training or related certificate preferred.
• Minimum five years of previous related experience.
• Comfort with Trimble GPS equipment, Trimble machine control, and Trimble total station setup.
• Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Ability to build surfaces for GPS equipment.
• Thorough understanding of surveying practices and equipment.
• Strong math skills.
• Clear verbal communication with internal and external contacts.
• Ability to explain rationale behind decisions.
• Work carefully and accurately.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Field and office position; travel outdoors in all weather.
• Local travel to job sites required.
• Occasional overtime may be necessary during peak times.

Responsibilities

• Producing and verifying cut sheets.
• Overseeing initial layout at the job site and providing continuous monitoring.
• Providing work control lines and elevations for accurate measurement and installation.
• Checking as-built conditions using surveying techniques.
• Providing topographic and cross-section surveys for planning and payment.
• Supervising Surveying Technician and Surveying Trainee personnel.
• Interpreting drawings and specifications for field layout decisions.
