Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in Rapid City, SD. Requires 1.5+ years nursing experience with an SD or compact license and ACLS/NIHSS certification.

The role covers a 44‑bed unit with mixed acuity, including telemetry and med/surg. Expect 12‑hour shifts, every other weekend/holiday, no on-call, and travel support with housing and licensure reimbursements.

Qualifications

• Active SD or compact RN license required.
• Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required.
• Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU.
• Completion of an approved nursing education program required.
• Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath) required.
• MI pharmacology knowledge and experience with titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) required.
• Experience with Heparin drips and cardiac rhythm interpretation required.
• Chest tube management experience required.
• TNK administration experience preferred.
• Epic EMR experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Care for a mixed acuity 44-bed unit including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg patients.
• Tends to direct admits, ED admits, and post cath lab patients.
• Treats MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker issues, and epicardial devices.
• Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow.
• Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular and post-surgical patients.
• RN to patient ratio typically 1:4, sometimes 1:3 based on acuity.
• May float to sister General PCU unit or to MS/Tele or ICU as needed.
• 12-hour shifts 0700-1900 or 1900-0700; rotating days/nights.

• Treats MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
• Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow
• Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
• RN to patient ratio typically 1:4, occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity
• Supported by CNAs (ratio 1:5-8), phlebotomy for peripheral draws, occasional resource nurse, tele tech for cardiac monitoring, and 24/7 RT coverage
• Uses Epic charting system, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
• May float primarily to sister General PCU unit, or to MS/Tele or ICU as needed within scope of practice
• 12-hour variable shifts (0700-1900 or 1900-0700), may include both days and nights during contract
• Every other weekend rotation required
• Every other holiday coverage required
• No on-call requirements
• Confirm cardiac telemetry strips at 6am and 6pm as tele tech oversees monitoring
• May be expected to precept nursing students
• Orientation includes 2 partial days of education plus 3 12-hour shifts on the unit
• Navy blue scrub color required
• Free parking provided
• Time off approval up to 7 days, with extension required if taking a full week; no time off permitted during the first 3 weeks of August annually due to a local event
• Scheduling includes at least two days off after a night shift before being assigned a day shift
• First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
• Travelers must live 100 miles away from any facility within the health system, no local candidates accepted
• Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
