Job summary

American Traveler is seeking a PCU RN for a Progressive Care Unit in Rapid City, SD. The position requires at least 1 year of nursing experience and current EPIC proficiency, with an active SD or Compact license. BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS are required, plus completion of an accredited nursing program.

Unit features 36-48 beds with tele, IV/central line care, wound care, and a rotating schedule. Weekend work is common; on-site parking is provided. First-time travelers with EPIC experience are welcome.

Qualifications

• Active RN license (SD or Compact) required.
• Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required.
• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required.
• Completion of an accredited nursing education program required.
• EPIC experience required, including for first-time travelers.
• Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips.
• Experience with wound care, line management, and drain/tube management.
• Comfortable with drip titration including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and occasionally Beta-blockers or antihypertensives.
• Must be comfortable taking Med/Surg patient assignments.

Responsibilities

• Progressive Care/Medical unit with 36-48 beds, including flexible semi-private rooms.
• Mixed patient population of 90% Med/Surg and 10% Intermediate Care, including long length of stay patients.
• Common diagnoses include DKA, pre/post-surgical care, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, DVTs, and CVA overflow.
• Administers oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feedings, and blood product transfusions.
• Manages peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices.
• Provides preventative and restorative skin and wound care.
• Reads and interprets telemetry monitoring.
• Patient ratios vary by pod: 1:5-6 on long length of stay units, 1:5 on Med/Surg Telemetry units, and 1:4 on Intermediate Care.
• Uses Epic, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment.
• 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week rotating schedule.
• Weekend rotation of up to 4 out of 6 weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun), with possible every-other-weekend (WOW) scheduling.
• No mandatory on-call requirement, though optional extra on-call shifts may be available.
• May float to any adult inpatient unit within scope of practice.
• Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), a non-patient-load charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and 24/7 RT and hospitalist coverage.
• Two days of facility/unit orientation including classroom training, plus two precepted shifts on the unit.
• May be expected to precept nursing students.
• Monthly compliance audits for pre/post pain scoring require 90% compliance.
• Navy blue scrubs required.
• Free parking available.
• Holiday RTO requests are not currently being accepted; requests should be submitted to the manager for approval.
• Time off approval available for up to a week and a half, with extensions required for a full week off.
• Blackout dates apply for the first 2-3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
• Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible.
• Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler.
• First-time travelers considered if they have more than 1 year of experience and EPIC proficiency.
