Job summary

American Traveler is hiring a Psychiatric Registered Nurse for an Adult Psychiatric Unit in New York. The RN must hold an active NY license and have at least 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience.

12-hour shifts with day and night coverage are available, and travel assignments include housing allowance and licensure reimbursement. The unit admits medically stable ER patients and uses CPI de-escalation techniques to minimize restraints.

Qualifications

• Active NYRN license required.
• Current BLS, ACLS and PALS certifications required.
• Minimum 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience.
• Minimum 6 months of medical experience (MS, MS-Tele, PCU, ICU, ER).
• BSN preferred but not required.
• CPI de-escalation training preferred; on-site training available.
• Prior experience with physical restraint application preferred.

Responsibilities

• Care for adults 18+ on a 26-bed Adult Psychiatric Unit.
• Administer medications, perform phlebotomy, and IM injections.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: Days 1:6-7, Nights 1:8.
• Safety checks and CP/ADL support performed by PCTs.
• Utilize Allscripts EMR for documentation.
• Charge Nurse coverage 24/7; travelers may be placed in charge role.
• Restraints (4-point leather) used only after de-escalation attempts fail.
• CPAP/BiPAP management as needed; telemetry not used on unit.

• PALS certification required
• Minimum 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience required
• Minimum 6 months of prior medical experience required (MS, MS-Tele, PCU, ICU, ER, etc)
• BSN preferred but not required
• CPI de-escalation training preferred; on-site training available
• Prior experience with physical restraint application preferred

Responsibilities

• Acute care setting on a 26-bed Adult Psychiatric Unit
• Patient population includes adults 18+ with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, depression, and borderline personality disorder
• Admits are medically stable ER patients; unit does not accept detox or rehab patients
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: Days 1:6-7, Nights 1:8
• Supported by PCTs performing safety checks, vitals, ADLs, and phlebotomy
• Uses Allscripts EMR
• No IVs administered on this unit; RNs may perform IM injections and phlebotomy
• Charge Nurse/ANCC coverage 24/7; travelers may be placed in charge role with reduced patient load
• Physical restraints (4-point leather) used only when de-escalation techniques are unsuccessful
• RNs manage CPAP/BiPAP as needed, though rarely used
• No telemetry monitoring on this unit
• 12-hour shifts: Days 7a-730p, Nights 7p-730a
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday rotation required (2-3 per year)
• No call or standby requirements
• Travelers float first to other adolescent or adult psych units, excluding crisis/acute or detox/rehab units
• Provide direct nursing care to adult psychiatric patients, including medication administration, phlebotomy, and IM injections
• Utilize CPI de-escalation techniques to minimize use of physical restraints
• Unit-specific orientation is 2-4 days with a preceptor, including orientation to multiple units for floating purposes
• RN scrub color is Royal Blue
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and could affect continued assignment
