Job summary

American Traveler is seeking a Behavioral Health RN for a 13-week day-shift assignment in Virginia. An active VA or compact RN license and behavioral health experience are required. The role is in an inpatient unit with a 1:6 patient ratio on a 3x12 schedule.

On-call may be required; travel benefits include housing and licensure reimbursements. Flu and COVID vaccines may be required per facility policy.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

American Traveler is seeking a Behavioral Health RN for a 13-week day-shift assignment requiring an active VA or compact RN license and behavioral health experience.

Requirements

• Active VA or compact RN license required in hand at time of consideration
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• Behavioral health nursing experience required
• BLS certification required; MOAB certification preferred
• Charge nurse experience preferred
• Experience in teaching hospital, community hospital, LTAC, and Trauma Level I/II settings preferred
• Skilled in administration of antianxiety, antidepressant, antipsychotic, mood stabilizer, and sedative medications preferred
• Experience starting and maintaining IVs preferred
• Experience caring for patients with anxiety, bipolar, depressive, personality, PTSD, psychotic, schizophrenia-spectrum, and trauma-related disorders preferred
• Experience managing self-injurious, suicidal, and assaultive/violent behaviors preferred
• Skilled in crisis intervention, de-escalation, behavior management, and psychoeducation preferred
• Experience with ECT, seclusion protocols, and physical hold protocols preferred
• Knowledge of legal aspects including use of seclusion and voluntary/involuntary commitment preferred
• Skilled in blood glucose monitoring, Foley catheter management, NG tube insertion, and oral/nasotracheal suctioning preferred

Responsibilities

• Behavioral Health unit within a hospital setting
• Day shift, 3x12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
• Patient ratio of 1:6
• Inpatient, locked unit, and medical/psych treatment settings
• On-call may be required for some specialty areas, with a 30-mile/30-minute response requirement
• Floating required in rotation with staff, in accordance with facility and Joint Commission policies
• Provide direct psychiatric nursing care within an inpatient behavioral health unit
• Must complete required EPIC training class (accelerated or 2-day) prior to start, unless recently employed at the facility within the past 6 months
• Facility is smoke and nicotine free
• Flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless exemption approved
• COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption required
• RTO requests must be submitted upfront and are approved at manager discretion; minimal time off requested during assignment
• Some holiday coverage expected
• Previous VHC staff must wait one year before returning as a travel clinician
• Behavioral health experience required, though first-time travelers may be considered
