American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Neuro night shift in Winston-Salem, NC. This travel position requires NC/compact licensure and prior travel contract experience.

The unit features a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) onsite, 42 daily census, and a 1:6 patient ratio, with 3x12-hour nights and weekend commitments. Epic charting is required, along with BLS, NIHSS, and IV/central line care proficiency.

Qualifications

• Active RN license, NC or Compact required.
• BLS and NIHSS certification required; ACLS preferred.
• Minimum 2 years total RN experience, incl. 1 year Med/Surg.
• Must have completed at least 2 travel contracts; not first-time traveler.
• Epic charting experience required.
• IV therapy, blood products, central and peripheral line care required.
• Experience with neurological conditions and cardiac monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Care for stroke, neurosurgery and other neuro diagnoses on a Med/Surg Neuro unit.
• 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) onsite; travelers not typically trained for EMU duties.
• Maintain 1:6 patient ratio on a 3x12-hour night shift.
• Floating to other MS/Tele areas as needed; may include COVID units.
• Use Pyxis, Epic and SBAR for charting and communication.
• Provide direct patient care for neuro patients in a fast-paced unit.
• 36-hour unit orientation with weekly scheduling.

Job description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Neuro night shift position requiring NC/compact licensure and prior travel contract experience.

Requirements

• Active RN license, NC or Compact required (pending license accepted at submission)
• BLS and NIHSS certification required; ACLS preferred
• Minimum 2 years total RN experience required, including at least 1 year of direct Med/Surg experience (must be specifically Med/Surg, not Med/Surg-Tele) in work history
• Must have completed at least 2 successful travel contracts prior to applying; unit does not accept first-time travelers
• Epic charting experience required
• Experience with IV therapy/phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care required
• Experience with neurological conditions including CVA, intracranial bleeds, seizure disorders, spinal cord injury, substance withdrawal, and traumatic brain injury
• Experience with cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and rapid response/code team use required
• Experience managing cardiac and vasoactive drips required; titration experience preferred
• Experience with isolation precautions/PPE, nasal cannula, and non-invasive airway management required

Responsibilities

• Medical Surgical - Neuro unit caring primarily for stroke, neurosurgery, and other neuro diagnoses such as epilepsy and subdural hematomas
• 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) onsite, though travelers are not typically trained for EMU duties
• 42 daily census with 43 total rooms/beds
• Patient ratio of 1:6
• Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (18:45-07:15)
• Unit accepts 36 or 48 hour weekly schedules
• Required to work every other weekend
• Floating required to other MS/Tele areas, which may include COVID care units
• Frequent floating may be required based on unit needs
• Uses Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR charting/communication systems
• Provide direct patient care for stroke, neurosurgery, and other neurological diagnoses in a fast-paced Med/Surg Neuro unit
• 36-hour unit orientation provided, with weekly orientation scheduling
• Navy scrubs required
• Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
• Pre-start modules (approximately 8-10 hours for acute care roles) must be completed prior to start and annually
• Local candidates within 50 miles accepted at a lower rate
• Previous Novant Health or New Hanover PERM/PRN/EP employees must wait 12 months before reapplying as a traveler, with facility approval required
• Current travel per diem clinicians must choose between travel or per diem status, not both
• Up to 7 days of RTO can be auto-approved if not on a holiday; no RTO allowed during the first week of assignment
• Must work 2 of 3 major holidays
• If RTO falls on a scheduled weekend, contract end date will be extended to make up those shifts
• Travel pairs allowed if on different units with separate schedules and transportation
• First-time travelers are not considered for this position
