Job summary

American Traveler seeks an experienced Labor & Delivery RN for a night shift in Virginia. The ideal candidate has active VA or Compact RN licensure and strong high-risk antepartum and fetal monitoring skills.

You will care for antepartum, intrapartum, and OB PACU patients in a 24-bed unit, with 3x12s, on-call expectations, and travel-friendly policies. First-time travelers are welcome to apply.

Qualifications

• Active VA or Compact RN license required.
• BLS certification required.
• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience.
• Experience in high-risk antepartum and labor/delivery care.
• Proficient in EFM and IUPC placement/calibration.
• Experience recognizing abnormal fetal heart rate patterns.
• Medication administration including magnesium sulfate, pitocin.
• Experience assisting vaginal/high-risk deliveries.
• Circulating for C-sections and managing hemorrhage.

Responsibilities

• Care for antepartum, intrapartum, triage, OB OR and PACU patients.
• Unit serves high-risk pregnancies; averages 250 deliveries per month.
• Maintain staffing ratios per unit guidelines.
• Night shift schedule of 3x12s (6:45pm–7:15am).

Job description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery RN with high-risk antepartum and fetal monitoring expertise for a night shift assignment requiring an active VA or Compact RN license.

Requirements

• Active VA or Compact RN license required, with limited exceptions for single-state license candidates from non-compact states
• BLS certification required
• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience required
• Experience in high-risk antepartum and labor/delivery care required
• Skilled in sterile speculum and vaginal exams, NST, reflex/edema/clonus checks, and obstetrical triage
• Proficient in External and Internal Fetal Monitoring (EFM) and IUPC placement/calibration
• Experience recognizing and treating abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
• Medication administration experience with antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate, pitocin, prostaglandins, and terbutaline
• Experience assisting with vaginal and high-risk deliveries
• Experience circulating for C-sections and managing hemorrhage/shock situations

Responsibilities

• 24-bed Labor and Delivery unit serving as a referral center for high-risk pregnancies across Southwest Virginia
• Cares for antepartum, intrapartum, triage, OBOR, and OB PACU patients over 20 weeks gestation
• Unit includes a 3-bed triage area, 2 ORs, and 2 post-anesthesia beds
• Averages 250 deliveries and 350 triage patients per month
• Staffing ratios include 1:1-2 laboring, 1:3-4 antepartum, 1:3 triage, 2:1 OBOR, and 1:1-2 OB PACU patients
• Skill mix includes Clinical Team Leaders, RNs, and Nursing Assistants
• Night shift schedule of 3x12s from 6:45pm-7:15am
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week block
• Variable on-call required, up to 24 hours per 6-week schedule block
• Requires experience with electronic charting systems
• Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract, with two required during winter holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve/Day)
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Local candidates within 100 miles are not accepted, with limited exceptions for those living 50-99.9 miles away eligible for a single 13-week assignment without extension
• Previous employees must wait at least one year before returning as a traveler
• Travelers who have completed 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, except by facility leadership review
• Facility may cancel up to 1 shift per 2-week period
• All RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted upfront with candidate profile
