Job summary

UMOM New Day Centers is seeking a Shelter Assistant to support a 24/7 shelter program in Phoenix. The role focuses on safety, health, and well-being, operating within a trauma‑informed care framework to assist participants and meet basic needs.

Candidates should have a high school diploma, some social services experience, and basic computer skills. The position is non-exempt, full-time, with an hourly salary range of $19–$20, and requires background checks and a valid AZ driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School or GED Diploma preferred.
• One year of professional experience in social services preferred.
• Experience with low-income or homeless populations preferred.
• Basic computer literacy including data entry, web navigation, typing and text editing.
• Proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly customer service to participants, volunteers, guests, and UMOM team members.
• Answer phone calls and transfer to appropriate person or department.
• Assist participants with program information and resources.
• De-escalate conflicts and contact leadership or emergency services as needed.
• Assist with donations, facility clean-up, and work orders.
• Provide program expectations documentation and support case management connections.
• Monitor safety, conduct rounds and wellness checks, and perform room searches.
• Oversee shelter operations communication and ensure procedures are followed.
