Job summary

Fehr & Peers in San Diego offers an internship program aimed at developing transportation planning and engineering skills through hands-on project work. Interns will engage with staff across levels, receive continuous feedback, and perform similar tasks to entry-level staff on a range of transportation studies.

Applicants should be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in a related field, with proficiency in Excel, GIS, and relevant design/analysis tools.

Qualifications

• Strong interest or knowledge of transportation planning/engineering principles and practices.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills, and presentation skills.
• A passion for partnering with and serving the local communities.
• Pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degree (junior or senior); fields include transportation/civil engineering, urban planning, or related fields.
• Proficiency in Excel, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, ArcGIS, statistical software (Stata, R, SPSS), traffic operations software (VISSIM, Synchro), design and drafting software (AutoCAD, MicroStation), or travel demand modeling software (TransCAD, Cube).
• Openness to exploring and responsibly using new technologies with critical thinking.

Responsibilities

• Analyze complex transportation planning or engineering problems.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including in a community engagement setting.
• Use software effectively and make timely and informed recommendations.
• Work on projects such as traffic operations simulations, bicycle and pedestrian plans, freight movement planning, travel demand modeling, transit planning, and regional transportation plans.
• Embrace opportunities to learn and adopt new tools and technologies while maintaining professional judgment and accountability for results.
