Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an experienced project inspector to oversee highway and bridge construction, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, and standards. You will coordinate with contractors and the Resident Construction Engineer (RCE), document deficiencies, and verify resolutions are completed on schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.
• 1 year of engineering or construction management work experience, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Monitor highway and bridge construction projects for compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.
• Notify contractor and Resident Construction Engineer of deficiencies and verify timely resolution.
• Assist RCE in supervising inspections to ensure work complies with plans and specs.
• Perform certified inspections for grading, paving, drainage, concrete, asphalt, and related work.
• Inspect traffic control on complex projects to ensure safety of workers and motorists.
• Prepare monthly and final estimates and plans worksheets for contractor payments.
• Ensure conformance with FHWA regulations, permits, and contract specifications.
• Document deficiencies, communicate with contractor and RCE, and resolve issues.
• Supervise staff, coach and train subordinates, establish work processes, and implement policies.
