Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky is hiring a Transportation Engr. Technologist I to assist in highway design projects, perform field and laboratory tasks, and contribute to evaluating plans under AASHTO/ASTM standards.

You will train to perform more advanced technical functions, with responsibilities spanning design, maintenance planning, and data collection for HPMS and traffic forecasting, while upholding safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • Education requirement: bachelor's degree in engineering technology or related field; or associate degree with Kentucky Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.
  • Experience substitution: combinations of education and relevant engineering experience allowed.
  • General skills: math, communication, attention to detail, proficiency with MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation of highway design projects including route location, geometrics, loads, pavement design, walls and drainage.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance operations; estimate costs and schedules.
  • Review field and lab tests for compliance with AASHTO, ASTM and agency specs.
  • Learn to make engineering estimates for proposed or modified projects.
  • Perform beginning level field inspections and office work for relocation of utilities/rails.
  • Collect and analyze transportation planning data for mapping, HPMS and traffic forecasting.

By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch II as a Transportation Engineering Technologist I in Bell County; you’ll have the opportunity to perform tasks requiring the application of technical principles in the design, development and, or, review of engineering projects while training to perform more advanced technical functions.

  • Assists in the preparation of highway design projects as to proper route location, geometrics, design loads, pavement design, retaining walls, drainage structures, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and agency specifications.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates maintenance operations in selecting materials, schedules labor and construction time and determines maintenance costs.
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates, and reviews the field and laboratory test programs for compliance with AASHTO, ASTM and agency specifications.
  • Learns to make engineering estimates on proposed projects or changes in existing projects.
  • Performs beginning level field inspections and office work in the relocation of utility and railroad facilities.
  • Learns to plan, schedule, and coordinate the collection and analysis of transportation planning data for use in mapping, Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), adequacy rating, traffic forecasting, rail and highway crossings and project planning activities.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, computer science, data science, geology, earth science, industrial technology, industrial drafting, design technology or construction technology. OR Graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: None

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: 1. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree OR an associate degree in an engineering field OR 2. High school OR 3. High school

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: 1. Must have three years of engineering-related experience with the first education option above; OR 2. Must have six years of engineering-related experience in which case related technical or vocational training will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years with the second education option above; OR 3. Must have four years of bridge inspection experience under the supervision of a Qualified Inspection Team Leader, plus successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course with the third education option above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites and other types of work zones which requires the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
