Job summary

Volkert Inc. is seeking a Transportation Engineer in Training to support the Gulf Region across Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Ideal candidates have 2–4 years in traffic or roadway design and hold an EIT certification, with a BS in Civil Engineering.

You will collect data, assist with traffic studies, and develop roadway plans using OpenRoads Designer, contributing to design and cost estimates while collaborating with clients and internal teams.

Qualifications

• BS in Civil Engineering.
• EIT (Engineer in Training) certification.
• 2-4 years of experience in traffic or roadway design.
• Familiarity with DOT design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO.
• Self-starter able to work with minimal oversight.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to build client relationships over time.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and maintain a safe work environment.
• Valid driver's license and a satisfactory MVR.

Responsibilities

• Collect and analyze data for inclusion in project plans, reports, and studies.
• Assist with traffic impact studies, interchange access requests, safety studies and signal timing.
• Prepare roadway design plans using OpenRoads Designer.
• Work on traffic signal design plans for new intersections and modifications.
• Develop TMPs and signing/pavement marking plans.
• Contribute to conceptual layouts, schematics, and signal timings.
• Prepare project construction quantities, cost estimates, specifications, and schedules.
• Review quantity estimates and drawings for compliance with requirements.
• Attend project meetings with clients and learn project budgets.
• Potential to participate in business development activities.
