Role Overview

The Director of AI – Transportation is a leadership role within our Transportation Business Group (TBG). You will define and implement the AI strategy across TBG, integrating AI solutions into transportation projects, collaborating with leadership, IT, and technology teams to scale AI initiatives, develop best practices, and establish AI as a core revenue-generating area.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic AI Vision & Roadmap: Develop and execute a multi-year AI roadmap aligned with TBG goals.
2. Program Development & Leadership: Lead AI program growth, talent acquisition, budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and project prioritization.
3. Collaboration & Coordination: Partner with business leads, project teams, and IT to enable AI-driven project delivery.
4. Governance & Best Practices: Establish standards, QA/QC, MLOps, data governance, and risk mitigation processes.
5. Client & Market Interface: Identify AI opportunities, develop proposals, and position HDR as a leader in AI solutions in transportation.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or related field.

Experience: At least 5 years delivering AI solutions for transportation projects and 7 years in the A/E industry. Proven leadership in AI project teams and integration into large projects.

Technical Skills: Proficiency with AI/ML libraries, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP), MLOps, data privacy/security, programming frameworks, and familiarity with AEC industry standards.

Leadership & Communication: Excellent communication skills, organizational, problem-solving, and team development abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with emerging AI technologies, data governance, AI strategy, and participation in industry forums.
