Qualifications

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, fleet maintenance, engineering, vocational/technical instruction, or closely related field.
  • Experience developing and/or delivering technical, vocational, safety, or employee training is preferred.
  • Education: Associate degree or 60 credit hours in automotive/related fields; substitution allowed with experience.

The Training Instructor - Fleet Maintenance plays a critical role in supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Trinity Metro’s fleet by ensuring maintenance employees receive the knowledge, skills, and training necessary to perform their duties effectively. The Training Instructor will assist in assessing the developmental and technical training needs of Fleet Maintenance employees, developing and delivering appropriate training programs, and evaluating employee progress and training effectiveness. The position will have a Training Specialist under them to help maintain training standards, records, materials, and programs that promote safety, quality, and continuous improvement throughout Fleet Maintenance.

This position’s responsibilities include:
  • Identifying training needs and opportunities within Fleet Maintenance, including situations requiring preventative, remedial, technical, or developmental training.
  • Develops, coordinates, and delivers training programs based on organizational goals, maintenance standards, employee development needs, operational requirements, and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Researches technical and instructional materials; develops lesson plans, presentations, written tests, practical exercises, training aids, and other instructional materials to support effective classroom and hands-on training.
  • Conducts formal classroom, hands-on, and on-the-job training for Fleet Maintenance employees. Training will include new-hire orientation, maintenance procedures, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair techniques, equipment operation, safety practices, apprenticeship programs, and other technical subjects.
  • Provides instruction and practical demonstrations on the proper inspection, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fleet vehicles, equipment, tools, and related systems.
  • Evaluates employee knowledge, skills, and training effectiveness through written examinations, practical demonstrations, observations, skills assessments, and other appropriate evaluation methods.
  • Provides feedback to employees and management regarding training performance and makes recommendations for additional or remedial training when necessary.
  • Review and update training programs, instructional materials, maintenance procedures, and training content to ensure information remains accurate, relevant, and consistent with current practices.
  • Provides technical guidance and support to maintenance employees regarding maintenance policies, procedures, processes, equipment, and best practices.
  • Coordinates and/or assists with manufacturer, vendor, and outside training programs, including scheduling, logistics, materials, employee participation, and documentation.
  • Works closely with the Fleet Maintenance leadership to coordinate training schedules, identify operational training needs, and support training projects and initiatives.
  • Maintains accurate training records, employee qualification and certification records, attendance records, test results, and other documentation related to Fleet Maintenance training.
  • Maintains the Fleet Maintenance training library, instructional materials, reference documents, equipment, and teaching aids.
  • Monitors developments in vehicle technology, maintenance practices, equipment, diagnostic systems, and instructional methods to identify opportunities to improve training programs and employee performance.
  • Supports the development and implementation of training programs designed to improve employee safety, productivity, technical proficiency, quality of work, and compliance with established maintenance standards.
  • Promotes a positive learning environment and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development within Fleet Maintenance.
  • Participates in Trinity Metro community activities and outreach events to promote public transportation, as assigned or scheduled.
  • Maintains confidential information and exercises appropriate discretion in handling employee, maintenance, operational, and training records.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Performs any and all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, or the ability to obtain a CDL with passenger endorsement within six (6) months of employment. Trinity Metro provides opportunities for employees to obtain a Class B CDL.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and occasional extended hours, as needed to accommodate training schedules and operational requirements.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate technical information and training concepts to employees with varying levels of knowledge, experience, and skill.
  • Must be able to conduct both classroom and hands-on training in a maintenance shop, classroom, and other operational environments.
EXPERIENCE
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, fleet maintenance, engineering, vocational/technical instruction, or another closely related field.
  • Experience developing and/or delivering technical, vocational, safety, or employee training is preferred.
  • Experience in the transit, automotive, heavy-duty vehicle, or fleet maintenance industry is preferred.
EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited college or technical school with an Associate’s degree or sixty (60) credit hours in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Vocational Instruction, Transportation, or another field directly related to vehicle repair and maintenance or training.

Any combination of experience, training, and/or education that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills may substitute for the required education.
