Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on gasoline, diesel, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicles and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, suspension, brake, steering, drivetrain, and computerized systems.
  • Assist junior technicians in diagnosing and completing difficult or specialized repairs.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to determine needed repairs, safety concerns, and maintenance needs.
  • Complete repairs in a timely, accurate and safe manner to support fleet availability.
  • Use diagnostic software, scan tools, and wiring diagrams to identify issues and resolve vehicle problems.
  • Perform road calls, vehicle recovery support or field repairs, as needed.

Van Shop Specialist

Description:

The Van Shop Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of fleet vehicles through advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repair services. This position supports other technicians with complex mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic repairs across multiple vehicle systems.

The Van Shop Specialist works closely with the Shop Supervisor, Quality Assurance personnel, and Training staff to maintain high repair standards, improve technician performance, and support operational readiness. The incumbent may also coordinate with outside vendors, manufacturers, and technical support representatives as needed.

This is an advanced-level technician position intended for individuals who have demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude, diagnostic capability, leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on gasoline, diesel, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicles and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, suspension, brake, steering, drivetrain, and computerized systems.
  • Assist junior technicians in diagnosing and completing difficult or specialized repairs, using safe work practiced and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to determine needed repairs, safety concerns, component wear and compliance with maintenance standards. Identify needed shop equipment, specialty tools, diagnostic equipment and parts required for efficient operations; report repair or replacement needs to management.
  • Complete repairs in a timely, accurate and safe manner to support fleet availability and operational needs.
  • Use diagnostic software, scan tools, electrical testing equipment, service manuals, wiring diagrams and manufacturer repair information to identify and resolve vehicle issues.
  • Perform road calls, vehicle recovery support or field repairs, as needed, based on operations requests.
  • Follow all safety procedures, environmental requirements, lockout/tagout practices and shop rules.
  • Share technical knowledge with less-experience technicians to help improve shop capability and repair consistency.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, technicians, vendors, and support teams regarding repair status and technical issues.
  • Stay current with evolving automotive technologies and participate in ongoing technical training.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid State Vehicle Inspector License, if applicable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain EPA 608/609 Certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Ability to pass required physical examinations and comply with DOT regulations, if applicable.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle systems, diagnostic software, and repair procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

Experience:

  • Four years of experience in the automotive industry
  • Two years of transit specific experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fleet maintenance management software.
  • Experience working with electric vehicles (EV), hybrid systems, compressed natural gas (CNG), or alternative fuel systems.
  • Prior experience mentoring or training technicians.

No more than five (5) attendance occurrences within a rolling 12-month period (internally)
