Job summary

VHB's Washington, DC and Tysons, VA transportation team is seeking a mid-level Traffic Engineer to join our collaborative group focused on improving mobility and safety.

The role emphasizes traffic signal design, pedestrian safety, pavement markings, and signing for state and local projects, with hybrid work and opportunities for leadership growth within the team. You will work with senior leaders, manage tasks, and contribute to high-profile contracts while developing into a leadership role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in traffic engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Experience with VDOT and/or public agency transportation projects in Northern Virginia preferred.
  • Strong experience in traffic engineering design with emphasis on traffic signals.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation.
  • PTOE certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare traffic signal design plans for VDOT and local projects.
  • Support VDOT contracts across Northern Virginia.
  • Develop design packages including signing, markings, and pedestrian safety.
  • Assist with quick-build traffic design.
  • Support multimodal improvements for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users of all ages and abilities.
  • Apply VDOT standards, specifications, and engineering best practices.
  • Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams, clients, and agency staff.
  • Assist with project management responsibilities including task coordination, schedule management, and client communication.
  • Support public outreach activities and presentations for transportation projects.
  • Conduct traffic operational and safety studies for intersections and corridors as needed.
  • Contribute to transportation policy, planning, and design guidance efforts as needed.
  • Work closely with senior leadership on opportunities for continued professional growth and increasing project responsibility
