Job summary

VHB's Transportation team in the Washington DC area is seeking a Traffic Engineer to grow into a leadership role. The candidate will work on traffic signal design, pedestrian safety, pavement markings, and signing for Northern Virginia projects and collaborate with senior leadership to expand project responsibilities.

The role emphasizes mentorship, technical excellence, and delivering mobility solutions while supporting public agencies and stakeholders in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• PE license required.
• 5+ years of professional experience in traffic engineering.
• Experience with VDOT and/or public agency transportation projects in Northern Virginia preferred.
• Strong traffic engineering design experience with emphasis on traffic signals.
• PTOE certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare traffic signal design plans for VDOT and local agency transportation projects.
• Develop signing, pavement markings, and pedestrian safety improvements.
• Assist with quick-build traffic design and project coordination.
• Support public outreach activities and presentations for transportation projects.
• Conduct traffic studies for intersections and corridors as needed.
• Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams, clients, and agency staff.
• Assist with task coordination, schedule management, and client communication.
• Support transportation policy, planning, and design guidance efforts.
