Job summary

Exponent is seeking a Principal Engineer for the Thermal Sciences Practice in multiple locations, including Menlo Park, CA. The role focuses on applying engineering techniques to failure analysis, product development, and risk mitigation while cultivating client relationships and leading technical teams.

The candidate will perform analyses, modeling, testing, and reporting, with heavy emphasis on business development and communication with clients and legal professionals.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline with practical/theoretical understanding of combustion, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure is required.
  • 10+ years of relevant technical consulting experience in fires, explosions, product safety, risk assessment or related fields.
  • Prior experience testifying as an expert witness is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects for failure analysis, root cause investigations and product development.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities.
  • Manage multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with experts in other disciplines.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Prepare written reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Gather information and convey technical conclusions to clients and legal professionals.
