Job summary

City of Duluth seeks a maintenance worker to perform semi-skilled tasks in snow and ice removal, road upkeep, and related duties under supervision. Expect manual labor with hand/power tools and operation of plow trucks and loaders in adverse weather.

Responsibilities include equipment prep and inspection, record-keeping, street patching, drainage work, traffic control setup, and routine vehicle maintenance. A valid Minnesota Class B license is required.

Qualifications

• Requires a minimum of one year of related education and/or full-time experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, bridge maintenance, or related activities.
• Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class B driver's license or privilege.

Responsibilities

• Maintain roadways for snow and ice control: remove snow from streets and alleys; open and widen streets and alleys of large accumulations of snow; remove snow from rights of ways; apply anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on streets and alleys under slippery conditions; and perform night or dawn patrols.
• Prepare and inspect winter equipment used for clearing roadways, which includes cutting edges and sanders; and cleaning equipment post storm.
• Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
• Assist in street patching using hot and cold mix asphalt.
• Perform drainage control measures, such as cleaning catch basins and culvert entries and exits.
• Assist in installing and maintaining traffic control devices, barricades, street signs, and snow fences.
• Perform light equipment maintenance such as changing tires, vehicle washing, repairing tire chains, adding fluids to proper levels, replacing cutting edges, and daily inspection checklists.
• Be an effective team member by exhibiting self-motivation, supporting other employees in handling tasks, interacting effectively and respectfully with others, showing a desire to contribute to the team effort, accepting assignments willingly, and completing tasks within agreed upon timelines.

SUMMARY/PURPOSE

To perform a variety of semi-skilled in the maintenance, and/or repair of City streets. The work involves performing manual tasks under direct supervision of a leadworker or other higher-level classified employees and may involve the use of hand and power tools and the operation of plow trucks and loaders; duties may be performed under adverse weather or working conditions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

For both one-of-a-kind and repetitive tasks, the supervisor makes specific assignments that are accompanied by clear, detailed, and specific instructions. Employee works as instructed and consult with the supervisor.

Age Requirements

A. Must be 18 or older by date of hire.

Education & Experience Requirements

A. A minimum of one (1) year of related education and/or of full-time, experience to include snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, bridge maintenance, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience) as a primary responsibility.

License Requirements

A. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class B driver's license or privilege.
