Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) District 6 is filling up to 32 temporary and/or emergency snowplow operator positions across several districts, including Winona, Red Wing, Austin, Dresbach and Stewartville. Responsibilities include maintaining roadways, inspecting winter equipment, and coordinating with dispatch on incidents.

Shifts commonly run through nights and weekends, with overtime possible during heavy storms.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no Airbrake Restriction or equivalent from another state and obtain a valid Class A CDL with no Airbrake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of initial placement into the position.
• Veterans may be eligible for a waiver of CDL based on military experience. Please contact your county Veteran Service Officer to obtain a copy of your VMET DD2586.

• Performs preseason snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup.
• Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing chemical.
• Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for inventory and resource management.
• Performs traffic control set-ups or reports to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Job description

MnDOT District 6 may fill up to 32 temporary and/or emergency snowplow operator positions in various district truck stations throughout the district. These positions will be filled in in the following locations:

• Austin
• Dresbach
• Red Wing
• Stewartville
• Winona

Some examples of work are listed below and not limited to the following:

• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment
• Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
• Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing chemical
• Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
• performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles

During a snow & ice season a snowplow shift is typically an A shift (12:00am-12:00pm) or B shift (12:00pm-12:00am); an employee may be asked to work more than an 8-hour shift depending on the length of the snow event. Temporary employees may work full-time or part-time (2-5 days, M-F, 7:00am - 3:30pm) or they work a snow & ice shift; snow & ice shifts can occur on regularly scheduled workdays and scheduled days off, including Saturday and Sunday. Emergency employees are intermittent fill in drivers; they work a snow & ice shift, filling in for regular operators who are not available. Hours of work may include overtime, various shifts depending on emergency situations and will include working nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one-hour of being called.
