Job summary

The New School’s College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire Assistant Stage Managers to join its concerts and events team in New York City. Reporting to the Event Production Manager, you will support stage moves, backstage operations, and artist entrances during events.

POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW

The Concerts & Events Production Department at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire Assistant Stage Managers to join its team. Reporting to the Event Production Manager, the Overhire Assistant Stage Manager is directly responsible for supporting the production of concerts and special events presented by Performing Arts at the New School. The Assistant Stage Manager will support Concerts & Events by facilitating stage moves, backstage operations, and artist entrances during events. They will also coordinate logistics and paperwork with the Stage Manager or Production Manager and assist with soundchecks and technical rehearsals as needed, to remain on schedule and ensure that all events are run smoothly and efficiently. Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more. This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Production department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.

CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create, edit, manage and distribute show paperwork in collaboration with the Stage Manager/Production Manager
  • Manage onstage and backstage activities including stage moves and artist wrangling
  • Communicate with creative team, cast and crew
  • Be familiar with all stage management responsibilities on a production
  • Supervise stage crew including student workers (as needed)
  • Manage backstage spaces including backstage wings, green room(s) and artist holding Spike furniture and other items
  • Other duties related to the successful execution of the event as assigned
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • One year previous experience in assistant stage management or three years experience as a production assistant
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to develop creative approaches to complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills that include management, teamwork and collaboration, and conflict resolution
  • Time and task management skills, including re-prioritization and an ability to work graciously under strict time constraints
  • Must be able to remain standing for long periods, bend down and/or lift and move up to 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School’s suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, WorkDay, Asimut and 25Live.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years previous experience as assistant stage manager, experience as stage manager
  • Familiarity working on concerts and/or special events
  • Ability to step in and call a show
  • Experience reading stage plots
  • Ability to read music
WORK MODE

This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement. #LI-Onsite

SALARY RANGE

$30.00/hour
