Job description

For the 2026-2027 school year, from January to June, Montgomery School is seeking a creative, student-focused, and dynamic teacher to lead a first grade classroom and cover a full-time teacher's maternity leave.

Primary Responsibility

The first grade teacher delivers an outstanding elementary education program that is developmentally appropriate and engaging for students. Teachers partner with colleagues and support families to build classroom and program community and continuity.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Teach a first grade classroom cohort, employing multiple forms of assessment, student differentiation, and curriculum design.

  2. Establish an effective classroom management system and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

  3. Model integrity, respect, responsibility, character, and service to others through words and actions.

  4. Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.

  5. Instruct students in areas designated by Montgomery’s program leadership, including language arts (Fundations), mathematics (Singapore Math), social studies, character, and service learning.

  6. Collaborate with colleagues and positively participate in professional development, adult learning initiatives, and program development opportunities afforded by the school.

  7. Cultivate an environment of mutual respect and partner with families to support the whole child by maintaining contact with students and parents through teacher conferences, phone calls, email, and regular updates to the classroom Veracross page, as well as written semester and conference reports. Be available to meet with students and/or parents before and after school, as needed or requested, in person or virtually.

  8. Actively promote outdoor learning, character education, and student focus on authentic engagement.

  9. Other duties as assigned that support the mission and high functioning of the school.

Candidate Requirements

Elementary classroom teachers should be creative in using age-appropriate techniques and technologies, have strong organizational skills, and model energetic engagement with young children.

Teachers should have appropriate education and experience for their desired teaching position. College and Graduate work are viewed favorably when combined with demonstrated motivation and joy for teaching elementary children. Experience teaching and leading in schools, youth organizations, and co-curricular spaces is preferred.
