This role supports lead teachers in delivering a nurturing, developmentally appropriate program. The position is nine months, with schedule and hours to be determined in consultation with supervisors and the employee contract.

  • Assist with class instruction, small groups, classroom organization, and student transitions.
  • Support classroom management systems and maintain order among students.
  • Assist with kindergarten students during most special area classes.
  • Communicate with kindergarteners and participate in parent/teacher conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the school’s mission and operations.

Job description

For the 2026-27 school year, Montgomery School is seeking a kindergarten half-day assistant teacher. Candidates for this position should be energetic, hardworking, and good at connecting with young students, faculty, and parents. The teacher should be creative in using age-appropriate techniques, have strong organizational skills, and model energetic engagement with young children. A successful candidate will be comfortable interacting with both adults and children.

This is a 9 month position beginning ideally in September, which reports directly to the lead kindergarten teachers and the Lower School Head. Hours and schedule to be determined in consultation with supervisors as stipulated in the employee contract.

Primary Responsibility

Help to deliver an outstanding kindergarten education program that is developmentally appropriate and engaging for students.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Assist the lead teachers in our two kindergarten classrooms.

  2. Help the teachers prepare lessons, including collecting materials and setting up learning tools.

  3. Be approachable and welcoming, and manage confidential situations with discretion, respect, and sensitivity.

  4. Assist the lead teacher during class instruction, small group work, classroom organization, and student transitions.

  5. Support the teacher-designed classroom management system and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

  6. Provide assistance with the kindergarten students during most of the special area classes.

  7. Communicate with the kindergarten during all possible interactions, as well as parent/teacher conferences.

  8. Other duties as assigned that support the mission and high functioning of the school.

Candidate Requirements

Teachers should demonstrate joy for teaching young children. Experience working with young children in schools, youth organizations, and/or co-curricular spaces is preferred. Candidates should be interested in thinking boldly, solving creatively, and leading compassionately in the service of children.
