Job summary

UT Austin’s Applied Research Laboratories seeks a Technical Writing Assistant to help prepare technical documents for high frequency active sonar systems used by the U.S. Navy.

You will create and maintain user guides, manuals, and related content in HTML, PDF, and Word, while managing GitLab issues. Responsibilities include aiding the documentation team, testing documentation accuracy in office and field settings, and assisting with multimedia content like photos and videos.

Qualifications

• Three years of clerical experience including some in technical writing.
• Accuracy in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and proofreading.
• Knowledge of tools such as Microsoft Office, MadCap Flare, or GitLab.
• Strong organizational skills and focus.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
• Willingness to learn software applications and tools as necessary.
• Able to work under pressure and accept supervision.
• Ability to work independently as well as with peers and management.
• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Supports project leads by performing the duties of a support writer on multiple projects.
• Assists with the writing and maintenance of technical user guides, O&M manuals, and other documents in HTML, PDF, and Microsoft Word formats as well as maintaining assigned Gitlab issues.
• Participates in testing and verification of sonar components, as needed, in office and field environments to develop and validate technical documentation.
• Participates in peer editing and publishing processes.
• Participates as a member of the documentation team internal IT working group and supports the management of IT resources, processes, and internal documentation.
• Provides photography and videography support to the documentation team, including capturing and editing multimedia content as needed.
• Other related functions as assigned.
